Expressions of Humanity: Taikan’s Figures
Expressions of Humanity: Taikan’s Figures
02APR ~ 12JUL 2026
This exhibition focuses on Taikan’s figure paintings. From the Meiji period through the postwar Showa era, as Japan underwent rapid Westernization, Taikan remained committed to expressing the spirit of the East. This dedication is also reflected in his figure paintings, where he chose themes rooted in Eastern and Japanese traditions.
His subjects range widely—from Buddhist imagery and figures inspired by Laozi and Zhuangzi to portrayals of Japanese women. We invite you to explore the rich variety of his expressions: from vividly colored, luminous figure paintings to dynamic and playful works such as the newly exhibited Hanshan and Shide, as well as refined ink paintings of dignified elegance.
