Welcome to Yokoyama Taikan Memorial Hall
The former residence of Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1958) in Ueno Ikenohata area is opened to the public as a memorial hall. When Taikan settled here
in 1908, it was a small site at first, but it was gradually expanded to
nearly the present scale in 1919 as Taikan gained fame as an artist. On
March 10, 1945, his residence was burnt down by an air raid, so he temporarily
moved to his villa in Izusan, Atami City. Taikan returned to Ikenohata
in August of 1954, as he reconstructed his home using the foundation of
the old residence. Since then, he produced numerous works here until he
died at the age of 90.
