97186818 SEP: Born as the eldest son of a former warrior of the Tokugawa family in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture.First graduate of the Tokyo Fine Arts School (currently Tokyo University of the Arts). Became an instructor at Kyoto City Technical School of Art. Engaged in reproducing Koga (old paintings) in Kyoto and Nara pref. by request of the Imperial Household Museum.Appointed as assistant professor of the Design Department at the Tokyo Fine Arts School. Began to use “Taikan” as his artist name.Joined the mass resignation from Tokyo Fine Arts School upon dismissal of directorship of Okakura Tenshin. Founded the Japan Art Institute with Tenshin.Tried a new painting technique without outlines, the so called “morotai (blurred style),” but was criticized unfavorably.Visited India in January to study art with Shunso and returned in July.     Traveled in the U.S. and Europe and held exhibitions with Shunso in New York, Washington and London.Moved to Izura, Ibaraki Prefecture with Tenshin, following the relocation of the Japan Art Institute .Rented a house in Ueno Ikenohata area of Tokyo and moved because his house in Izura was burnt down,Exhibited “Floating Lantern” at the 3rd MEXT Art Exhibition. (Later purchased by MEXT.) Did not return to the new house in Izura and established the house in Ikenohata as the main residence.After Tenshin moved to Boston, the Japan Art Institute virtually dissolved.Re-established the Japan Art Institute in Yanaka, Ueno and became the administrator with Shimomura Kanzan.Tagore, a Nobel Prize winner, came to Japan and stayed at Taikan’s residence.Purchased the leased land in Ikenohata and constructed the new residence, which was completed in 1919.“Metempsychosis” (Important Cultural Property, Collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), painted in Taikan’s second-floor studio, was submitted to the 10th Inten Exhibition. Added ‘Shōkodō,’ (guest room) when restoring his residence after a large earthquake.Invited French Ambassador Paul Claudel and his wife to his home.Moved the tea room beside ‘Shōkodō’ by purchasing additional land. Changed the garden from a bamboo grove to a pine grove.Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Kuni visited Taikan’s residence.Her Imperial Highness Princess Higashifushimi and her heir visited Taikan’s residence.Led a delegation to the Japanese Art Exhibition in Rome hosted by the Italian government. Received the ‘Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur’ from France.Fudō Myō-ō was presented by Otsuka Minoru, founder of Otsukakogeisha, Co. Ltd.Taikan’s residence was destroyed by the Great Tokyo Air Raid.Reconstructed the residence in Ikenohata. Moved to the new residence from the villa in Atami City.Planted five wild cherry trees in the garden.Died at home on 26 SEP.
