82The finished “Moonflowers”, which is nearly the same as this work in completeness of detail, was shown at the Japanese Art Exhibition held in Rome in 1930. Taikan said, “Ink contains five colors and ink is one color, black. At the same time, ink’s infinite variations in light and shadow show greater complexity than color does, and straightforwardly and subtly express a feeling of presence transcending color”. (“Regarding the Japanese Art Exhibition held in Rome”, 1930) Indeed, one could say that, through works such as “Moonflowers”, Taikan introduced to people in the west the distinctive emotions that ink painting can express.56夕ゆう顔がお （未完）昭和4（1929）年頃掛軸絹本60.0 × 86.0 cm 本作とほぼ同じ仕上がりを示している完成作《夕顔》は、ローマで開催された日本美術展覧会（昭和5年）に出品された。 「墨に五彩ありで墨は黒一いろでありながら、濃淡渇潤の千変万化は色彩以上の複雑さを現わし、色彩を超絶したる実在感を端的に微妙に表現する」（『羅馬開催日本美術展覧会に就て』昭和5年）と語っているように、大観は、水墨画が表現し得る独特の情緒を、この《夕顔》などの作品を通じて西洋に紹介したともいえる。Moonflowers (Unfinished Work)
