81The moon in the middle depicts the sacred gem and the pine branches drawn on the left and the right are two dragons fighting for the treasure.It is considered that Taikan developed the concept of this work by influence of Okakura Kakuzō (alias Okakura Tenshin), Taikan’s master, who states that “the Asian ideal full of grand illusion” and “European science” are the two strong powers that put restraints on the mind of the Japanese people. Taikan illustrated Kakuzo’s thoughts as two dragons fighting to become the monopolist of the sacred gem. 55双そう龍りゅう争そう珠じゅ昭和4（1929）年掛軸絹本62.0 × 95.0 cm （未完） 明治38年に描かれた《双龍争珠》と同様、中央に描かれた月は宝珠を表し、左と右に描かれた松の枝は、宝珠を争う二頭の龍を表している。明治期の表現よりも、松の枝葉がくっきりと浮かび上がり、龍をかたどる枝ぶりも、より力強くなっている。完成作（水野美術館蔵）は、昭和4年の第5回淡交会（後述）に出品された。Two Dragons Fighting for the Sacred Gem (Unfinished Work)
