80In April 1926, a six-panel folding screen and a double hanging scroll were commissioned by order of the Imperial Household Ministry. In 1928, Taikan presented to the Imperial Court the double hanging scroll “Cascading Water” (owned by The Museum of the Imperial Collections). This work is an unfinished version of the right-side scroll. On the right edge of the picture is a sheer rock cliff on which pine trees powerfully spread their roots. The left-side scroll of the finished work depicts a majestic waterfall. Taikan said of the commission, “I felt so humbled that at first I painted cautiously, wearing formal haori and hakama despite the very hot weather.” It is clear that the work was produced with great dedication.54飛ひ泉せん (未完)昭和3(1928)年頃掛軸絹本172.5 × 72.0 cm 大正15年4月、宮内省より六曲一双屏風と双幅掛軸揮毫の御下命があり、昭和3年6月、大観は《飛泉》(双幅掛軸・皇居三の丸尚蔵館蔵)を宮中に納めた。 Cascading Water(Unfinished Work)
