79In 1925, Taikan, along with Kanzan Shimomura, created the wall painting “Light and Dark,” commissioned for the interior of the Waseda University library by the university’s president, Sanae Takata. Expressed in the title is the meaning “reading brings light.”These two pieces are small preliminary paintings for the commissioned work. Darkness and clouds are depicted with ink-and-wash, while the sun is painted with gold. The completed wall painting is an enormous picture measuring 4.45 meters in diameter. The paper on which it was painted is a sheet of washi specially made by the first-generation Heizaburo Iwano, a master Echizen washi craftsman. 53明めい暗あん昭和2（1927）年頃掛軸（2幅）絹本各径 28.0 cm （小下絵） 大正14年、早稲田大学の総長・高田早苗より依頼を受け、大観は、下村観山とともに同大学図書館内を飾る壁画《明暗》を制作した。この題には「書物を読めば明るくなる」という意味が込められていた。 本作（二点）はそれに備えてつくられた小下絵で、闇は水墨、太陽と雲は金で描かれている。なお、完成した壁画は直径4.45メートルという巨大なもので、その支持体は越前和紙の職人・岩野平三郎（初代）による特漉であった。Light and Dark(Unfinished Work)
