70In the four-part series made up of “haze”, “rain”, “wind”, and “snow”, each painting portrays one season in the mountains. Taikan said, “I want to convey the feeling of colors with ink.” Indeed, these paintings depict the mountains’ever-changing atmosphere with black ink only. The finished work, “Four States of the Mountain” (owned by the Okura Museum of Art), was shown at the Post-revival 12th Exhibition of the Japan Art Institute.47山やま四よん趣しゅ・春しゅん靄あい大正14(1925)年掛軸絹本59.0 × 85.0 cm 「霞」「雨」「風」「雪」の四幅対で構成される、山々の四季を描きわけた作品。大観自身、「墨をもって、色の感じを出したい」と語っているように、墨一色で折々の山の風情を表現している。完成作《山四趣》(大倉集古館蔵)は、再興第12回日本美術院展に出品された。 (未完)Four States of the Mountain: Spring Haze (Unfinished Work)
