68Taikan portrayed the arrival of spring by drawing a Japanese bush warbler, which is also know as the “spring-announcing bird.” In the background are thorny branches and a pine cone on the ground showing that coldness of winter still remains in nature.45早そう春しゅん （未完）大正13（1924）年掛軸絹本66.0 × 86.5 cm 別名「春告鳥」ともいわれる鶯を描くことで、春の訪れを表現した作品。背景には冬のイバラや地面に落ちた松ぼっくりなどが描かれ、いまだ寒さの残る自然の様子が表されている。本作のような、丁寧な自然観察に基づく精緻な花鳥画は、大正末の大観作品の特徴である。完成作（徳川ミュージアム蔵）は再興第11回日本美術院展に出品された。Early Spring (Unfinished Work)
