63The right-hand screen of the folding screen takes on a faint light by applying gold leaf on the back side of the drawing material. On the other hand, for the left-hand screen, Taikan applied the gold leaf on the front surface to see different effects by trying different techniques on the right and left screens. During the Taisho Period, Taikan created many byōbu-e (screen paintings) using bright colors to break new ground in the decorative painting style.　右隻では、画面の裏側に金箔を貼る「裏箔」の技法を用いており、画面全体が淡い光を帯びている。一方、左隻は表から金箔を貼っており、左右別々の方法をとり、効果の違いを試していることがわかる。大正期、大観は、鮮やかな色彩を用いた屏風絵に多く取り組み、装飾的な作風にも新境地を求めていった。本作はその一例である。
