40The work portrays the height of summer using ripe egg plants and lush leaves as motifs. Although he only uses black ink, the shiny purple of the egg plants and the green color of the leaves are depicted.31午ひる下さがり昭和21（1946）年頃掛軸紙本66.0 × 92.5 cm　大観が熱海の伊豆山に疎開していた頃に制作された。　熟れた茄子と生い茂った葉をモチーフに、盛夏の風情を表現した作品。水墨表現ながら、茄子のつやのある紫と葉の緑が想像される。葉にとまる蜻蛉の姿など、自然に対する優しいまなざしも感じられる。ほぼ同じ構図の作品が、第2回日本美術展覧会（昭和21年）に出品された。Early Afternoon
