37A piece created in tribute to “Chōyōei Island”, the subject of the New Year’s Imperial Poetry Contest for 1939. This contest, in which the emperor provides a different subject each year, has been an annual New Year’s event at the Imperial Palace since 1869.28朝ちょう陽よう映えい島とう昭和14（1939）年頃掛軸紙本51.0 × 64.0 cm 海の向こうに朝日が昇る、大観作品によくみられる構図。「海かい暾とん」と題されることも多い。浜辺は何も塗らずに白地のまま表現され、そこに数本の松が力強く生える。 本作は、昭和14年の勅題「朝陽映島」にちなんで制作された。勅題とは、天皇が出す歌の題のこと。明治2年より、宮中においては、年始の行事として勅題による歌会始が行われている。Island in the Rising Sun
