The clear, pure air of winter is depicted in this work with the use of ink-and-wash only. The central paulownia tree bears flower buds and husks that have released their seeds. The two sparrows perched on a branch are puffing out their feathers and nestling together as if fending off the cold. The background is left unpainted, and the picture retains the texture of the mashi (hemp paper) surface. The dry-brush ink painting style, which makes effective use of this fibrous quality, is another element conveying the severity of winter.3223冬ふゆ昭和8（1933）年頃掛軸紙本72.0 × 100.5cm　冬の冴え冴えとした空気を、水墨のみで表した作品。中央に描かれている桐の木には、花芽と、種を放出した後の殻がついている。枝にとまる二羽の雀は、寒さをしのぐように羽をふくらませて寄り添う。背景は地塗りをせず、「麻紙」の風合いをそのまま残した画面となっている。その繊維質を生かした渇かすれ筆による水墨表現からも、冬の厳しさを感じることができる。Winter
