31Taikan loved quintessentially Japanese flora such as pine, bamboo, plum, and cherry. In particular, he spoke of his affinity for the “smoothness” of bamboo types like madake and hachiku. Taikan is even said to have grown madake and shihochiku bamboo in the garden of his residence, and he painted numerous works with bamboo as principal subject. The sparrow, a common motif in flower-and-bird pictures since ancient times, is often combined with bamboo, as in this painting.22竹たけ昭和7（1932）年頃掛軸紙本97.0 × 32.5 cm　大観は、松、竹、梅、桜などの日本的な植物を愛し、とくに竹については、真竹や端は竹ちくなどの「サラサラとしている」ところが好きだと語っている。自邸の庭にも、真竹や四方竹を植えたといい、竹を主題とした作品も多く描いた。また雀は、古来よく花鳥画の画題となっており、本作のように竹と組み合わされることが多い。Bamboos
