ローマ日本美術展覧会（昭和5年）の開催にあたりイタリアに赴いた大観が、現地ローマの風景に取材し制作した作品。廃墟となった遺跡や草を食む羊の姿などの西洋の景色を、伝統的な水墨画ふうに描くという試みをみせている。円窓の画面は、《春色》の作例もあるように、この頃の大観がしばしば用いた表現方法である。30In 1930, Taikan left for Italy to participate in the Japanese Art Exhibition held in Rome.
