26The crested myna painted on this piece was bred as pets in ancient China and became a popular subject of kachō-ga (flower and bird paintings.) It was appreciated by many because the Chinese character for “eight”, an auspicious symbol, appears when it spreads its wings out.18叭は叭は鳥ちょう大正15（1926）年掛軸絹本79.0 × 106.0 cm 叭は叭は鳥ちょうは、中国南部等を原産地とするムクドリ科の鳥（ハッカチョウ）のこと。羽を広げると「八」の字の模様が見えることから、縁起のよい鳥として古来親しまれてきた。 大正15年、貞明皇后の御下命を受けた際、大観は、御所の吹上御苑で飼育されていた叭叭鳥を写生し、また浅野家より楓の枝を譲り受けて、止まり木として描いた。本作はこの献上画に関連して制作されたものと思われる。Crested Myna
