24This piece depicts the image of the daruma in practice, in which it sits facing the rock wall of a cave. The daruma is a high-ranked priest considered to be the founder of Zen Buddhism. It has been a popular motif since old times, but when Taikan draws daruma, he features the somewhat humorous expressions.16達だるま摩大正12（1923）年頃掛軸絹本143.5 × 51.0 cm 洞窟の岩壁に対峙して座す、修行中の達磨像を描いている。念頭には雪舟筆《慧可断臂図》の構図があったものと思われる。大正期の大観は、このようにユーモラスな表情の道綽人物をよく描いた。また、筆勢や抑揚のない、途切れそうに細い衣紋線なども、この時期の大観作品に特徴的な表現である。The Daruma (Bodhidharma)
