19Red flowers and blue-green moss stand out vividly on the ink-and-wash tree trunk. Taikan painted many pictures of plum trees, a quintessentially Japanese subject along with pines, bamboo, and cherry trees. Braving the harsh cold of winter, plum trees yield beautiful blossoms from their strong, stubborn branches. Taikan was fascinated by the wonder of this phenomenon. In his works he sometimes painted the plum tree that he planted in his garden, and this was one of the subjects he felt closest to.11紅こう梅ばい大正9（1920）年頃掛軸絹本133.0 × 27.5 cm　水墨で描かれた幹に、紅い花と青緑の苔が鮮やかに映える。松、竹、桜とともに、日本を代表する題材として、大観は梅も数多く作品にしている。力強く頑固な枝から、厳寒に耐えて美しい花を咲かせる。その不思議さに、大観は魅力を感じていた。庭に植えた梅を作品に描きこむこともあり、大観にとってはごく身近な題材のひとつでもあった。The Red Plum Tree
