4海かい松しょう明治30（1897）年頃掛軸絹本103.0 × 48.0 cm11One of Taikan’s early works. Several pine trees extend straight from bottom to top in this bold composition. The treetops break through the upper part of the picture, conveying a sense of the pines’ height and vigor.A departure from the Kano school and other traditional painting styles can be seen in details such as the gentle lines tempering the brushwork in the tree trunks, and the vivid blue stippling used to depict the water surface. This can be regarded as a precursor of Taikan’s exploration of the “mōrōtai” technique.　大観初期の作品。数本の松が下から上にむかってまっすぐに伸びる大胆な構図をとる。梢の部分が画面上部に突き抜けるさまは、松の木の高さや勢いを感じさせる。　幹の描写にみられる、筆勢をおさえたゆるやかな線、水面を描く鮮やかな青の点描など、狩野派等の伝統的筆法から離れていく様子がうかがわれ、「朦もう朧ろう体たい」の試みの予兆と見ることもできる。Pine Trees at Sea
